Twitter, Treasure and Hidden Truths

Have you ever heard someone say a person is “one of a kind?” When you think about it, we’re all “one of a kind” but some just stand out more than others, for one reason or another. At PBS Western Reserve we have a lot of programs about people who stand out. Scientists, artists, writers, athletes, chefs, carpenters and so many others. Let me share a few programs about people who stand out in their own ways.

Imagine having a lot of money. I mean more money than you could ever spend in a hundred lifetimes. That’s Elon Musk. He’s the richest person in the world and one of the most controversial. Lately, he’s made a name for himself for buying and then messing around with Twitter — now known as X. FRONTLINE looks at why Musk wanted the social media platform, and what he’s going to do with it. “Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover,” a special two-hour edition of the series, airs this Tuesday at 9 PM.

Musk built quite a business empire to make his money. Dutch Shultz did it another way — he stole it. Shultz was a gangster from the Bronx in New York. They say he took his ill-gotten booty and buried it somewhere in the Catskill Mountains — all $50 million worth. Naturally, no one knows just where this treasure is hidden but that doesn’t stop people from looking. SECRETS OF THE DEAD, “Gangster’s Gold” shows how Shultz got the loot, where it might be and what kind of people are on the hunt to find it. See Find out this Monday at 5 PM.

Every week on FINDING YOUR ROOTS we get to meet some interesting people thanks to Henry Louis Gates Jr. Even more fun is seeing their reactions to learning about their ancestors. This week Gates looks at the family trees of actors David Duchovny (of “X Files”) and Richard Kind (of too many TV shows and movies to list here.) Duchovny’s family came to America from Eastern Europe after stopping in the Middle East. Kind always thought his family escaped the Holocaust. Sadly, he got some bad news and that wasn’t the case. It’s heartbreaking to see Kind’s reaction — but it shows the humanity inside all of us. Meet these two actors and their once-hidden families on FINDING YOUR ROOTS, this Tuesday at 8 PM.

There are a lot of interesting people in the world, and you get to meet them on PBS Western Reserve. When you see these folks on one of our shows, consider supporting our efforts to bring them to you by becoming a member. We can’t do it without you.

Steve creates the PBS Western Reserve television schedules. Long before finding great programs for you to watch he was a radio DJ. He and his wife are avid travelers, preferring unusual vacation spots such as Cuba and Budapest and sailing across the Atlantic (on an ocean liner, not a sailboat). Tops on his list of famous people he’s met is Fred Rogers. A close second is Mick Jagger or maybe Elton John. His favorite PBS show is “Sherlock Holmes” with Jeremy Brett. Or with Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s a toss-up, he says. Either way, he loves looking for new and interesting programs to share with you.
