Farewell, Inspector Morse

Farewell, Inspector Morse

All good things must come to an end and so it is with the many versions of Inspector Morse. The latest is the prequel, ENDEAVOUR, which gives us the full backstory of the Oxford detective. PBS Western Reserve sends him off in style, first with a new documentary that looks at all three Morse series. In MORSE & THE LAST ENDEAVOUR, we remember the original series from 1988; the spin-off LEWIS, which aired from 2006 to 2015; and the final (or is it the first?) chapter—ENDEAVOUR. We’ll hear from cast members of all three series and why they think it has endured. I hope you’ll watch MORSE & THE LAST ENDEAVOUR this Sunday at 9 PM.

The following Sunday truly is the beginning of the end as we present the final season of ENDEAVOUR. It’s 1972 and Morse returns to Oxford, finished with rehab and ready to get back to work. It’s a good thing because there’s always a murder to be solved. The episode “Prelude” gets us started on Sunday, June 18, at 9 PM.

One of the best MASTERPIECE dramas to come along in a while was AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. For me, it had everything—exotic locations, action, witty dialog and a great story. Can Phileas Fogg travel the globe in less than three months? This MASTERPIECE version had a great cast that brought the story to life in a way no other version ever has. If you missed it the first time we aired it—or want to see it again—you’re in luck. PBS Western Reserve brings it back on Friday, June 16, at 9 PM.

Now for something completely new … RIDLEY. Alex Ridley is a British cop forced into early retirement. He becomes a jazz club entertainer and is (of course) brought back to consult on a tough case. It has what public television dramas are known for good stories, excellent acting and English accents. Watch it beginning Sunday, June 18,  at 8 PM on PBS Western Reserve and on Passport.

If you’re a PBS Western Reserve member, you know our dramas are second to none. You also know that it’s viewers like you who make it possible. If you’re not a member, join here and support all the great programs you see on PBS Western Reserve.

Steve creates the PBS Western Reserve television schedules. Long before finding great programs for you to watch he was a radio DJ. He and his wife are avid travelers, preferring unusual vacation spots such as Cuba and Budapest and sailing across the Atlantic (on an ocean liner, not a sailboat). Tops on his list of famous people he’s met is Fred Rogers. A close second is Mick Jagger or maybe Elton John. His favorite PBS show is “Sherlock Holmes” with Jeremy Brett. Or with Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s a toss-up, he says. Either way, he loves looking for new and interesting programs to share with you.
