After graduating near the top of her class at Stanford Law School, Sandra Day O’Connor could not convince a single law firm to interview her, so she turned to volunteer work and public service. A Republican, she served two terms in the Arizona state senate, then became a judge on the state court of appeals. During her 25 years on the Supreme Court, O’Connor was the critical swing vote on cases involving some of the 20th century’s most controversial issues, including abortion and, affirmative action. She was the tiebreaker on Bush v. Gore. Forty years after her confirmation, this biography recounts the life of a pioneering woman who both reflected and shaped an era.

From her first glimpse of Alaska as a young girl, Margaret “Mardy” Murie had a special connection to the Northland. For more than seventy years, Murie tirelessly championed the environment. Her work led to the founding of The Wilderness Society and the establishment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has been known for years as “the mother of the conservation movement,” and ultimately received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Narrated by Harrison Ford, the program concludes with John Denver performing “A Song for All Lovers,” a waltz that he wrote for Mardy and her husband, Olaus.

In the 1980s, a three-story ark was built in Newark’s devastated Central Ward. Self-taught artist and engineer Kea Tawana designed and constructed the massive boat by herself. She used salvaged material from nearby 19th-century buildings being torn down, in an area fast becoming an urban wasteland. She worked on the ark for years before city officials took note and demanded its destruction. It no longer exists, but the ark remains a powerful symbol of hope in Newark and beyond.

Follow the restoration of a magnificent canvas created by a 16th century nun who is considered the first great woman artist of the Renaissance. Plautilla Nelli painted a depiction of “The Last Supper” in the mid-1500s. It remained largely unnoticed and deteriorating for centuries, and was rescued by philanthropist Jane Fortune.
