Some of the best scenery in the Yorkshire Dales can be found on a 52-mile, 4-day circular walk that begins and ends in Aysgarth, with overnight stops in Hawes, Keld and Reeth. THE HERRIOT WAY explores the locations associated with the world-famous vet and author known to his fans as James Herriot.
Consisting of stunning views of natural landscapes, the Herriot Way is named after the pseudonym for the real-life veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, who lived and worked in the Dales for many years. The path is based on a walking holiday he took with his son, around the youth hostels of Aysgarth, Grinton and Keld. The program includes interviews with Alf’s son Jim Wight and stories of the land that inspired Herriot’s writing.
Along the walk’s length, the traveler visits beautiful valleys, high open fells and heather-clad moorland, and passes through many of the locations where the original All Creatures Great and Small series was filmed. The route crosses one of the highest points in Yorkshire, visiting historic monuments and passing barren industrial wilderness scarred by lead mining. Filled with breathtaking views and a closer examination of how the Dales has played a part in the region’s history, THE HERRIOT WAY explores why Yorkshire continues to be a popular travel destination for visitors today.
